Event Description:

Wherever you are in the world on February 27th, take a break and grab a few people to sit down and enjoy some tea! Indonique Tea is hosting a global tea party to promote their tea and raise awareness about the labor and living conditions of those who pick the tea leaves.

In some of the world's most renowned tea-growing regions in India, families have worked and lived for more than a century behind the fences of tea estates, eager for change but afraid to voice their opinions lest they lose their jobs and homes. The average daily pay is about $1.28 for a tea plucker in Darjeeling, one of the lowest wage rates in the formal economy, according to the Indian Labor Bureau. The estimated literacy rate for tea families across India is a dismal 30 percent, and there is a high prevalence of preventable diseases like malaria and tuberculosis. Mercy Corps works in these regions to empower tea pluckers and their communities to find opportunities and build better lives for themselves.

Indonique Tea's Program T42 is dedicated to raising the quality of life these families in places like Darjeeling and Assam through Mercy Corps Programs.
